Motorized window treatments are no longer limited to luxury homes or complicated hardwired systems. Today’s rechargeable motors are quiet, reliable and surprisingly affordable. They can operate roller shades, solar shades, zebra shades, honeycomb shades, Roman shades and other custom window treatments with the touch of a button.

Motorization is often selected for convenience, but it can also be the correct operating system for a large, oversized or difficult-to-reach shade. How much does motorization add to the cost of a shade?

For most custom roller, solar, zebra, honeycomb and Roman shades, motorization typically adds approximately $200 to $300 per shade compared with a manual operating system.

The exact price depends on several factors:

Large shades may require a stronger motor, so their motorization cost can be higher than the cost for a standard-sized window.

When is motorization required rather than optional?

Many customers choose motorization simply because it is convenient. However, with some large or oversized roller and Roman shades, motorization may be recommended or required.

A large shade can place too much weight and strain on a manual chain-and-gear system. Even when a manual system is technically available, it may be harder to operate and may experience more wear over time. A properly sized motor raises and lowers the shade evenly without requiring the homeowner to pull a chain repeatedly.

How do rechargeable motorized shades work?

Rechargeable battery motors are the power option we recommend and install most often for shades. Because the battery is built into the motorized system, there is no disposable battery pack to replace and no electrical outlet is normally needed beside the window.

With typical daily use, a rechargeable motor may operate for approximately nine to twelve months between charges. Actual battery life depends on the size and weight of the shade and how frequently it is operated.

Charging generally takes approximately three to four hours. The motor is recharged with a cable connected near the shade. The entire shade does not need to be removed from the window.

Rechargeable motors are a practical option for existing homes because they provide motorized operation without opening walls or running new electrical wiring.

Are motorized shades noisy or unreliable?

This is one of the most common concerns we hear from homeowners. Based on our experience, a quality motor is quiet and reliable when it is properly matched to the size and weight of the product.

At Palm Beach Shutters & Shades, we prefer to work with Somfy and Rollease motors. Both manufacturers offer highly reliable, ultra-quiet motor systems. As with many products, less-expensive motor brands may be louder and can be less reliable over time. The brand and quality of the motor matter just as much as the decision to motorize the shade.

Most of the ongoing maintenance is simply charging the motor occasionally. Correct measuring, product selection, programming and installation are important. An undersized motor or an improperly installed shade can affect performance, especially on a large opening.

How are motorized shades controlled?

The simplest option is a handheld remote control. A remote can operate one shade individually or be programmed to control groups of shades together. For example, a homeowner may have separate controls for individual windows and another setting that operates every shade in the room.

Compatible motor systems can also be connected to a smart-home hub. A Bond Bridge, which is typically around $130, can connect many radio-frequency shade motors to app and voice-control systems. Compatibility depends on the selected motor and the homeowner’s existing smart-home equipment, so this should be confirmed before the products are ordered.

Roller and solar shades

These are among the most common motorized products. They work well for individual windows, large openings and sliding glass doors. Solar shades can reduce glare while maintaining a view, while light-filtering and blackout fabrics provide different levels of privacy and light control.

Zebra shades

Motorized zebra shades allow the alternating fabric bands to move between open and closed positions without using a chain. Motorization also provides a clean, cordless appearance.

Honeycomb shades

Honeycomb shades can be motorized for convenient privacy and light control. They are especially useful on groups of windows where the homeowner wants the shades to move together.

Motorized drapery uses a powered traverse system to open and close the fabric panels. Drapery motors cost more than typical shade motors. The motorization upgrade is generally closer to $900 to $950, and these systems are usually powered by plugging directly into a nearby electrical outlet.

Norman® SmartDrape™

Norman SmartDrape is a hybrid product that combines the soft appearance of ripple-fold drapery with the light control and walk-through convenience associated with vertical blinds. It can also be motorized.

The motorization upgrade for SmartDrape is similar to traditional motorized drapery—generally around $900 to $950. However, Norman SmartDrape is available with a rechargeable motor, which is the option we typically use. It normally does not require a nearby electrical outlet.

Norman SmartDrape combines the appearance of soft drapery with the functionality of a vertical-style window treatment.

Is motorization worth the additional cost?

Motorization is usually most valuable when it solves a practical problem rather than being treated only as a technology upgrade.

How long do motorized shades take to order and install?
